Suicide First Aid: The accidental helper

This is a half-day [4 hour] interactive workshop which provides practical training to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. Attendees will be better prepared to:

  • reflect on how our attitudes and beliefs about suicide affect the Suicide First Aid role;
  • discuss suicide with a person at risk in a direct manner;
  • build a collaborative approach to the Suicide First Aid role;
  • review immediate suicide risk and develop informal safe-plans;
  • identify resources available to a person at risk of suicide.

Mark Purcell has been attending manhood and Manshine for over fifteen years, and running the men's yoga classes for most of that time. He is a Physio in his other life and has loved yoga as an adjunct to that, for about 35 years. Mark has two yoga teachers training's and a Pilates course to bring to his and your practice. Above all Mark seeks to have you explore your mind, body, spirit, and most importantly, your heart, through Yoga

Morning Meditations

Saturday will feature Osho Dynamic meditation. This is a powerful process of 5 stages over 1 hour using breath, sound, movement and stillness to release stored angst. It is an ideal process to begin the weekend by clearing the space for the new Gathering experience. Sunday will feature Sufi Centering using gentle, repetitive movement with breath and sound followed by circling/whirling then stillness to integrate.

Clearing the Decks

Clearing The Decks is a daily reset procedure. It combines physical exercise, emotional release, active meditation, and some grounding procedures, it is an excellent way to deal with the “stuff” of life in all its forms. The objective of the process is to safely bring up and face whatever our “issues” are and then transform this energy into something constructive and useful. The process occurs during an actual walk. You will need to bring a water bottle, some reasonable walking shoes and I recommend that you wear shorts rather than long pants.

40FIED Strength & Movement

Brad and Tamas run an online coaching/training program called 40FIED. The program was designed to help men over (or under) 40 restore or improve movement, flexibility, vitality, etc. The workshop covers simple, fun, ground based bodyweight strength and mobility training methods. The workshop is for you if you feel stiff around shoulders or lower back, if you have aches and pain or just want to improve your fitness.

When this is well, sitting in a man’s optimum level, there is flow – or an ease to his life. When it’s not, there is stagnation, effort and negative feelings. This workshop explores these elements and what it means for each man.

Digging in the dirt

We hold ourselves back in a variety of ways which are usually hidden from us. This workshop is about bringing our hopes, fears and beliefs into our awareness so that we can harness then or discard them as we see fit. The workshop is wholly experiential and has no lectures or whiteboards. It offers a staged process of self-enquiry to peel back layers and expose us to ourselves. At the end of the workshop most of us will have had a few light-bulb moments and leave with a different energy than when we arrived.

2-Minute Noodles and the rubber-band affect

My insight is that often when men attend their first Gathering, or some other program, they believe when it’s finished that that’s enough, they’ve found “it”, the missing piece, their life purpose or passion, and that they’ve gained sufficient insight. As a result, they often don’t attend again.

States of consciousness come and go 1,000 times a day. Some states can last for just moments, like surprise or confusion. Other might endure, like contentment or anxiety, belonging or alienation. Other states might taunt us, like chronic fear or lust, aggression or passivity. States are conditions, trained into us during childhood, supported or condemned by our everyday contexts. Learning to recognise our own common states, and what conditions provoke them, can serve to help us make better choices. With clear seeing, we are free to orient towards states that we enjoy.
